Meet the Team: An Interview with Anthony Brookes, Registered Manager

At the heart of Hibiscus Care Services is Anthony Brookes, our dedicated registered manager. With a wealth of experience and a deep-rooted passion for providing exceptional care, Anthony plays a vital role in shaping the organisation’s operations and ensuring the delivery of high-quality services. Let’s delve into his story and the meaningful impact he plans to bring to the team at Hibiscus Care Services.

Can you provide a brief overview of Hibiscus Care Services and its mission?

Hibiscus Care Services is all about putting the person at the centre of their care package. Our mission is to provide true person-centred care, where each individual’s needs, wants, desires, goals, and aspirations are the main focal point. We aim to support as many people as possible without compromising our commitment to the people we serve. While the company must cover its costs, pay its staff, and remain viable, we always ensure that our decisions and plans prioritise the well-being of those we support.

Could you share your personal journey and experiences that led you to the field of health and social care?

Before entering the field of health and social care, I was actually a chef. Although I was skilled and experienced in this field, I never truly felt fulfilled. Then, one evening, a friend of mine, James, visited me for dinner. We hadn’t spoken in some time, and he shared with me his work as a support worker and the immense passion he had for it. He spoke of the highs and lows of the job, and I vividly remember him saying, “Most people tell me they couldn’t do what I do, but I absolutely love it.” That struck a chord with me, and I thought to myself, “I could do that, and I would love it.” Intrigued, I conducted further research into the industry, learning about the people in need of support and their unique challenges. I applied to become a support worker, got the job, and since then, I’ve been dedicated to supporting individuals. It was the best decision I ever made, and I owe it to James for inspiring me to pursue this fulfilling career.

What core values or principles drive the work of Hibiscus Care Services?

At Hibiscus, our tagline is “Support To Bloom,” which encapsulates our core principles. We firmly believe that everyone, with the right kind of support, can grow and thrive. Our approach is to work closely with each person, identifying their unique needs and helping them develop skills and independence. Ultimately, our goal is to support individuals to the point where they no longer need our assistance and can live independently. While we acknowledge that not everyone can reach that level, the drive to promote growth, skills, and independence is fundamental to everything we do.

Are there any unique programs, services, or initiatives that you have developed to meet the specific needs of the individuals you support?

During my time with a different company, I had the opportunity to assist individuals transitioning from long-term stay hospitals back into the community. This involved collaborating with the Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) to find suitable housing and conducting assessments for any required adaptations. We engaged with the person, their family, and their current teams to gain insight into their needs and individuality. Based on this information, we recruited the right staff team and ensured they received appropriate training to support the person effectively. It is this experience that I aim to bring to Hibiscus Care Services, enabling us to support more people in living their lives to the fullest.

What are some of the key challenges you’ve encountered in the care sector?

One significant challenge in the care sector is the shortage of skilled and dedicated caregivers. The demand for care often surpasses the available workforce, resulting in increased workloads and potential burnout among caregivers. Additionally, high turnover rates pose a challenge. Factors such as low wages, demanding work conditions, and limited career advancement opportunities contribute to frequent staff turnover. These turnover rates can negatively impact the continuity and quality of care provided to individuals.

How do you envision Hibiscus Care Services evolving and expanding its impact in the coming years?

In the future, we hope to build a vibrant online community where people who receive support and those working in the industry can connect. Our vision is to create a platform where individuals can share their experiences, learn from one another, and foster growth. Additionally, we aim to develop our website as a go-to resource for information. Whether someone is about to transition into supported living or a family seeking a new provider for their loved one, they can access reports, and articles, and ask questions, drawing upon the experiences of others. We aspire to create an inclusive and informative space that supports and empowers individuals in their care journeys.

What advice would you give to individuals considering a career in health and social care?

If you’re considering a career in health and social care, I would recommend developing strong communication skills. Communication is crucial in this field, as you’ll interact with individuals, their families, and other healthcare professionals. Focus on cultivating empathetic and active listening skills while maintaining clear and effective communication.

In addition, it’s essential to cultivate a compassionate mindset. Working in health and social care means supporting individuals during vulnerable and challenging times. Nurturing a genuine concern for the well-being of others will enable you to provide empathetic and person-centred care.

Lastly, prioritise your own well-being by developing resilience and self-care strategies. This industry can be emotionally and physically demanding, so maintaining a healthy work-life balance, seeking support from colleagues and friends, and engaging in activities that recharge you are crucial. Remember that self-care allows you to provide the best care for others, and continuously seek opportunities for growth and professional development.

Is there any message or insight you would like to share about the importance of care services?

The care services industry is of paramount importance. With changing demographics, evolving healthcare needs, and an increased emphasis on mental health and well-being, the demand for care services continues to grow. These services step in to provide vital support and assistance to individuals.

Care services not only address immediate health concerns but also work towards preventive care, health education, and promoting healthy lifestyles. They help individuals lead fulfilling lives and alleviate the burden on healthcare systems.

Moreover, the impact of care services extends beyond individuals to families, communities, and society as a whole. By supporting families, care services enable them to balance work and caregiving responsibilities, fostering economic stability and productivity. Communities benefit from healthier, more resilient individuals who actively contribute to their social fabric.

Recognising and addressing the challenges the care services industry faces, such as staffing shortages and fair compensation, is crucial. We must value, support, and invest in care services to meet the evolving needs of our communities. These services are a cornerstone of our society, providing essential support, compassion, and expertise to individuals in need.
